From PBR to DSPBR in SOLIDWORKS 2026: Understand the Advanced Material Support in SOLIDWORKS
SOLIDWORKS 2026 introduce a major visual upgrade, modernizing background scenes, lighting, materials, and rendering. These improvements make models look more realistic, but files created in SOLIDWORKS 2025 may appear warning when opened in the SOLIDWORKS 2026.
The update introduces a physically based rendering system and
enhanced lighting, focusing on:
- DSPBR (Physically Based Rendering) Appearances
- Updated Background Scene Library
This blog highlights the key visual
changes and provides guidance to update your existing projects for consistent,
high-quality results.
SOLIDWORKS 2026 supports DSPBR appearances, creating a seamless transition when you open designs in SOLIDWORKS Visualize to produce high-quality, photo-realistic images.
Updated Background Scene Library
SOLIDWORKS 2026 introduced a more background
scene library, designed to improve lighting accuracy and make models look
more realistic.
- High-resolution HDR environments for sharper, more detailed backgrounds
- Studio and industrial lighting setups with improved realism
- Outdoor scenes with natural light and accurate shadows
- Enhanced image-based lighting optimized for DSPBR materials

Suppose you used the “Backdrop Grey with Overhead Light” scene in SOLIDWORKS 2025. When
you open this file in SOLIDWORKS 2026, a pop-up warning appears stating:
"The scene configuration is not
supported. The default scene will be used."
This happens because the legacy scene
is no longer available in the updated library. SOLIDWORKS 2026 automatically
applies a default scene to ensure your model is still visible, but the original
lighting and background are replaced.
To restore or customize the scene, you
can use the Edit Scene feature in
SOLIDWORKS 2026. This allows you to:
- Choose a new HDR background from the updated library
- Adjust lighting, reflections, and shadows to match your desired look
- Save a custom scene for future use or team-wide consistency
This workflow ensures that older models
remain compatible while taking full advantage of the enhanced visual realism in
SOLIDWORKS 2026.
Removal of Legacy Background
Scenes
In SOLIDWORKS 2026, several older
background scenes have been removed from the built-in library. These legacy
scenes were removed because:
- They used Low-resolution textures, limiting visual quality
- Lighting values were
inconsistent, causing unreliable
results
- Highlights and shadows were not calibrated for physically based rendering (PBR)
- Results varied across different hardware and rendering setups
- They produced inaccurate reflections on modern materials.
