What Is the Purpose of SOLIDWORKS ENVELOPES and How Do You Use Them?
Using SOLIDWORKS ENVELOPES and it’s purpose

Volumes can be defined in an assembly using special parts called SOLIDWORKS ENVELOPES. SOLIDWORKS ENVELOPES can then be used to select components by comparing them with the envelopes to see if they are inside, crossing, or outside the envelope's volume.
Where to find:
-
Component Properties: Select SOLIDWORKS ENVELOPE
Property Manager: Select SOLIDWORKS ENVELOPE when inserting a new component
Using SOLIDWORKS ENVELOPES, envelopes can be used to either select components or to show/hide components. There are three methods to use SOLIDWORKS ENVELOPES.

Getting Started with SOLIDWORKS ENVELOPE Mode:
Step 1: Open up an assembly in SOLIDWORKS.
Step 2: Right-click on a part or sub-assembly in the FeatureManager Design Tree and select Component Properties.

The Three Methods to Use SOLIDWORKS ENVELOPES Are:
-
Selecting Components:
To select using an Envelope, right-click the envelope in the FeatureManager Design Tree and select Envelope and then Select Using Envelope.
Components are then selected based on their spatial location in reference to the envelope.

Show/Hide Components:
To select components and either show or hide them, right-click the envelope in the FeatureManager Design Tree and select Envelope and then Show/Hide Using Envelope.
Components can then be either shown or hidden based on their spatial location in reference to the envelope.

Primary Use of SOLIDWORKS ENVELOPES:
Feature | Description |
---|---|
1. Exclude from BOM | Keeps BOMs clean and focused |
2. Zero Mass | Doesn’t affect weight calculations |
3. Reference Only | Ideal for layout or context geometry |
4. Improves Performance | Especially useful in large assemblies |
5. Useful for Skeleton Design | Drives parametric, top-down workflows |
