How to Identify and Understand Design Differences Using Compare Documents in SOLIDWORKS?

In 3D modeling, design data can be revised throughout the entire process from the initial concept to the final product or to improve model efficiency through design changes made by R&D. To analyze how a model’s structure or behavior has been evolved through its revisions, SOLIDWORKS has an effective tool called Compare Documents for these functionalities. Let’s have a look on how it can be used.

Compare Documents

Compares the properties of two SOLIDWORKS documents (or) two configurations of same document and identifies the following properties.

 1)Document Properties

 2)Features

 3)Geometry

 4)Bill of Materials

Here, we took a two-part file as an example for the comparison.

To access the tool, go to Evaluate tab > Compare Documents

Open the two models which you need to do comparison. Here, we took the part files Phase1 and Phase2.

Click Compare Documents and the Compare Interface appears on Task Pane.

Add the two files in reference document & modified document and select the items
which need to compare and click “Run Comparison”.

Note: Though we are using part file here, we cannot add BOM.

Once the comparison is completed, there are tabs shown for specific results.

1)Compare Documents Result

In this tab, we can find the below property differences between the files.

• File size
• File last saved
• Face Count
• Feature Count
• Suppressed Feature
• Mass
• Volume
• X-Coordinate (Center of mass)
• Y-Coordinate (Center of mass)
• Z-Coordinate (Center of mass)

2) Compare Features Result It identifies the differences of appearance properties like (colors, optics) & solid features with 3 types in both the files. The feature types are;

• Unique Features – Having unique feature and name
• Modified Features – Same feature name with different parameters.
• Uncompared / Identical Features – Same feature name with same parameters.

In this, we can identify the Cut-Extrude and fillets are added in the phase 2.

Also, we can find the visual representation of the modified features in the graphics
area.

3) Compare Geometry Result
In this, we can find the changes in volume and faces between the files and it helps to identify exactly where the model geometry has changed.

Here, the result shows the common volume and the material add & removal area in the model.

Conclusion

By using this functionality, you can compare different revisions of a design model
and key benefit of this comparison process would help us to maintain the track of
improvement in project management, risk mitigation, and enhanced product quality. By tracking these differences between revisions, teams can identify potential issues early, reduce errors, and ensure better communication and collaboration.
