HOW TO MIGRATING THE PDM SERVER COMPONENTS (DATABASE & ARCHIVE)

Regardless of which portion of the vault you are planning to relocate, complete all of the following steps:  Backup your data are the

1. Migrating the Database Server.

  • All Database Backups
  • ConisioMasterDB Backup
  • Restore Backups

2. Migrating the Archive Server

  • Archive Folder Backups
  • Archive settings Backups
  • Restore the Archive folders
  • Restore the Archive settings

Before you start upgrade get backup as mentioned below things.

i. Archive Folder Backups

This is the storage of the PDM system. It consists of all your files in a structure
that is easy for the database to read. It consists of a set of 16 folders (0-9 and a-f) which each contain subfolders for each unique file in the vault, and those subfolders contain each version of that file.

Backing up the archive folders is simply making a copy of the entire set of 16 folders just like you would back up any other Windows files/folders.

To find the archive locations, please refer the below image

ii. Archive settings Backups

This is a backup.dat file created by the Archive Server Configuration Tool that contains the settings and registry entries for your archive server.

iii. Database Backups

The first two components are the Databases used by the vault/s. If you open “SQL Server Management Studio” and log into your SQL Server/Instance you should see a database for each vault on your machine and a single “ConisioMasterDB” database, each of which will need to be backed up.

These databases contain all the information related to username, passwords, file
names, file metadata, file references, vault setup, etc. However, they do not contain any files themselves.

1. Installing New Database Server

Install SQL Server Software:
  1. Install and configure specific versions of SQL to use with PDM, SOLIDWORKS PDM Professional uses a Microsoft SQL-based database to store information about files and activities in a file vault.
  2. SOLIDWORKS PDM 2025 support SQL Server 2019 or later versions up to
    2022.
  3. For local installations, you must run Setup as an administrator.
  4. If you install SQL Server from a remote share, you must use a domain
account that has read and execute permissions on the remote share.
Note: Refer SOLIDWORKS PDM Administration Manual for MS-SQL Server
Installation Procedures. Install SQL Server Management Studio once you’ve
installed SQL Server. You need to restart the machine after installing SQL Server

2. Installing New Archive Server:

Step-1:
Run the setup.exe for the SOLIDWORKS Installation Manager.

Step-2:
Select “SOLIDWORKS PDM server 2025” components on this computer

Step-3:
On the PDM Server configuration page, select the following:
The PDM Server version (Professional) you want to install.
Confirm that the Archive Server and Database Server features are selected.

Click “Back to summary

Note: If planned to Install both Archive Server & Database Server on Same Machine, Enable Archive and Database Servers in Select Features as shown in above image.

Step-4:
Input your SQL server location and login information.

Step-5:
Select to accept the license agreement to proceed with the installation.

Finally, click to “Install

Restore the Archive Folders:

a) Copy the 16 archive folders (0-9 and a-f) to the new server. If possible, maintain the exact same file path between the older server and the new.
  • For example, if the archives were located under “C:\ProgramFiles\SOLIDWORKSCorp\SOLIDWORKS PDM\Data\Vault Name” on the old server, then recreate that path on the new server.
  • If this is not possible, there will be instructions on updating the archive
folder paths in the registry under the Update the Registry section later on.

Restore the Archive Settings:

  • Open the Archive Server Configuration tool on the new server (located in the Start menu under SOLIDWORKS PDM).
  • Go to Tools > Backup Settings

Restore the Database Backups:

STEP 1:
Open and log into Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio on the new server and click Connect.

Right-click Databases from Object Explorer and select Restore Database.

STEP 2:
In the Restore Database window, switch the Source to Device.
Then click the … button to the right.

STEP 3:
In the Select backup devices screen, click Add and select corresponding .bak
database backup files you created earlier. Click OK and head back to the Restore
Database screen

STEP 4:
Go to the Options tab from the left menu.
Check the Overwrite the existing database (WITH REPLACE) box.
Enable “Close Existing Connection to destination database

STEP 5:
Using the same steps, repeat for all other databases.

(You should have one for the ConisioMasterDb and one for each vault you’re migrating).

Update the Registry (If Applicable) *

Once the restore of your database components has been completed, you’ll need to
update registry values for both the archive and database.

STEP 1:
Open the Windows Registry Editor by searching “regedit” in the Start menu (ADMIN login).

STEP 2:
On the Database server navigate to the following Key:

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\SolidWorks\Applications\PDMWorks
Enterprise\MailService\Server.

STEP 3:
Then, update the Server key by double-clicking it and entering the SQL server name

On the Archive server

Since you’re moving the archive as well, need to Update the Registry section.

Need to log into the archive server and update the following registry keys.
  1. Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\SolidWorks\Applications\PDM Works Enterprise\Archive Server\Vaults\Vault Name
  2. Server: This should match the SQL server name and instance name.
  3. SQLDbName: This should match the name of the restored vault database from SQL Server Management Studio under Databases in Object Explorer. (Do not change DbName, only SQLDbName).
Restart the SOLIDWORKS PDM Services for any machine you edited the registry on.
You can do so by searching Services from the Start menu.
  • Locate SOLIDWORKS PDM Archive Server & SOLIDWORKS PDM Database
Server (they may be on separate machines, depending on how you installed
    your server components).
  • Select each one and click Restart.
