What's new in SOLIDWORKS 2026 – Import/ Export

Face and Edge Identifiers During Import

When you import CAD files from other platforms, SOLIDWORKS now keeps face and edge identifiers (IDs) consistent through the entire release cycle. This improvement helps maintain stable references and ensures that downstream features remain valid, even when you reimport updated versions of the same file.

This update applies to imported files from:

·         Autodesk® Inventor®

·         CATIA® V5

·         PTC Creo®

·         SLDXML

·         Solid Edge®

·         Unigraphics®/NX™

During the import process, SOLIDWORKS reads the face and edge IDs from the source CAD file and uses them when creating new SOLIDWORKS features. If the source file is later updated and reimported, SOLIDWORKS reuses the same identifiers, so all downstream features regenerate correctly.

This functionality reduces feature loss or rebuild errors that could occur when external geometry changes. The stable identifiers are maintained throughout the current full release cycle (for example, SOLIDWORKS 2025).

Benefit:
You can now work confidently with imported CAD models, knowing that changes or updates to the source file will not break related SOLIDWORKS features — improving reliability and reducing time spent fixing rebuild errors.

This enhancement makes working with multi-CAD data smoother and ensures better consistency when managing imported designs across software versions.
